The "Exit" is the ultimate North Star for any founder. But at the recent Business Meetup from

in Toronto, a harder truth emerged: many brands aren't ready to be bought — they are just ready to be tired.

joined the circle of elite entrepreneurs to look past the "multiples" and focus on the Infrastructure Gap that often devalues high-growth companies during due diligence.

The "Manual Wall" in High-Volume Merchandising

One of the most compelling conversations involved a founder who built a scaling merchandising powerhouse in just two years. While the brand is a success story on

and WordPress, it’s hitting a common "Manual Wall."

Universal Complexity: From Shopify to Satellites

The diversity of the Toronto tech scene was on full display. We shifted from discussing bulk apparel logistics to the high-stakes world of Aerospace Engineering.

Meeting with an investor leading a specialized team in Alberta launching actual satellites was a grounding reminder. Whether you are shipping physical goods or orbital hardware, the Leadership DNA is identical:

We didn't go to the Flippa meetup to pitch; we went to participate. Success in the current economy is found in General Communities — shared spaces where a Shopify Expert and a Space Investor can trade notes on scaling without losing their minds.

We’re proud to be a fixture in this Toronto circle. We’re leaving with a fresh perspective on what it means to build a business that is truly

What happens when a simple client request exposes a massive gap in a multi-billion-dollar ecosystem?

For the team behind LangShop, it was the start of a five-year journey that redefined Shopify localization and birthed a powerhouse product company:

Beyond the Billable Hour: Spotting a Gap in the Global Market

In 2016, our team was a compact agency of 30–40 people, focused entirely on client services. The "Eureka" moment didn't happen in a boardroom — it happened in a support ticket. A client needed their Shopify store to be multilingual, but the platform offered no native support.

At the time, the market was a duopoly of compromise. If you wanted a multi-language store, you only had two real options:

We saw a third way: a stable, SEO-friendly solution deeply integrated into the Shopify architecture, without the "flicker" or messy code.

The Lean MVP: Two People and a High-Stakes Experiment

The first MVP was a lean operation, created by just one developer and a CEO who acted as the PM, PO, and QA tester. To avoid the "code-breaking" reputation of apps like Langify, LangShop v1 used a "

Instead of editing a client's live site, the application created a hidden, localized copy of the store’s theme. We then injected logic into that copy to instantly swap languages. Built on a backend of

, the app focused on speed and automation. We introduced

 — a feature competitors lacked — allowing users to connect their own Google Translate or DeepL API keys to translate thousands of products in minutes.

Solving the "Flicker": Clean Code Over Quick Fixes

As users brought us increasingly complex store designs, we had to innovate beyond simple parsing. We developed two "life-saver" features:

The Radical Pivot: LangShop v2 (2018-2019)

In 2018, Shopify invited us into an exclusive circle of partners to test their new Localization API — a direct way for apps to talk to Shopify's core. We faced a choice: patch our old code or burn it down and start fresh. We chose the latter.

We moved to a modern stack — Laravel and

to ensure the app felt like a native, "official" part of the Shopify admin. The most critical technical feat was the "Seamless Switch." We built background workers to migrate years of translations from our old custom logic to Shopify’s new official system. Users woke up to a faster, cleaner interface without losing a single word of their data.

The official cooperation with Shopify immediately multiplied product adoption: before the integration, LangShop had about 800 users, and after the release, +200–300 new stores were onboarded almost instantly, resulting in a 2–3× growth in usage. This partnership proved how platform collaboration can trigger rapid, sustainable product growth.

Humanizing the Machine: The TextMaster Partnership

We eventually realized that for high-ticket e-commerce, machine translation wasn't always enough. LangShop became one of the first apps to integrate

, store owners could order professional human translations with one click. The content was sent via API and automatically returned to the app once finished, removing the need for manual copy-pasting or external contractors.

By 2021, LangShop had become a market leader, earning the coveted "

" status from Shopify. However, Shopify also announced its own native tool,

. Recognizing that the market was maturing and that competing with the platform itself would require infinite resources, we chose a strategic exit.

LangShop was sold in 2021 for a significant multi-million dollar sum to investors.

The Birth of DevIT.Software: Using an Exit to Fuel a Powerhouse

This exit was not an end, but a beginning. The capital from the sale was used to create DevIT.Software — a completely independent product company with its own dedicated leadership, developers, and support staff.

stands as a testament to that first 2016 experiment. We’ve moved from an outsource model to a product-first culture, proving that with the right technical vision and a willingness to rebuild when the market shifts, a single support ticket can lead to a global success story.

Don’t Build a Shopify App Until You Read This.

Building a successful Shopify app is often described as a matter of execution: solid engineering, clear UX, and enough persistence. In reality, even products that meet all of these criteria can fail.

 — a Shopify app developed by DevIT Software — from its initial idea to its eventual shutdown in early 2026. It is a practical case study on how a product can solve a real problem, be technically sound, and still struggle to achieve sustainable traction in the world of Shopify app development.

Every Shopify store is built on content: product descriptions, collections, blogs, pages, email templates, and localizations. That content directly affects SEO performance, customer trust, and brand perception.

We believed grammatical mistakes were an underestimated but meaningful problem. Not dramatic enough to trigger alarms, but serious enough to quietly hurt conversions and credibility at scale. That belief led us to build Grammar Content Assistant — an app designed to analyze and improve grammar across an entire Shopify store at once. Not page by page. Not manually. Systematically.

What Made Grammar Content Assistant Different

The product was not about fixing a sentence here and there. Its core value proposition was

Unlike browser-based tools like Grammarly, which operated locally, our app ran in the background and integrated directly with

API to target the full scope of a store. To make the app feel native in the Shopify admin, we built the interface using

, Shopify’s official UI component library for app developers. This helped us to align with the platform’s UX patterns and reduce friction for merchants.

First Release and Technical Reality (2023)

The first version of the app launched on August 18, 2023. At that stage, it did not rely on AI. We used public grammar solutions such as LanguageTool to power the analysis. Very quickly, we ran into a hard reality: real Shopify content is not “just text.” HTML markup, Liquid templates, email layouts, and dynamic variables fundamentally complicate grammar analysis.

To make the checks work, we had to strip HTML before analysis and then attempt to reconstruct it afterward. Context was lost. Structures broke. Results became inconsistent. The MVP was unstable, difficult to maintain, and prone to edge‑case failures. We rotated developers, rewrote background processes, and patched critical issues — yet the product remained technically fragile for a long time.

Despite this, the novelty of a free tool led to

Switching to AI — and Rising Expectations (2024-2025)

In mid-2025, we fully rebuilt the application and integrated AI. From a quality standpoint, this was a breakthrough. We integrated advanced AI via

. AI could process content holistically without breaking on HTML or Liquid structures.

To support this, we deployed a professional-grade infrastructure:

in 2024 as we iterated. We also maintained 24/7 customer support. While we don't include a specific cost for this team (as they support our entire portfolio), 24/7 availability is an essential standard for any reputable Shopify app.

Monetization Changed the Dynamic: $100,000 vs. $59.95

AI, however, comes with real costs. We chose a transparent pricing model: merchants paid per report based on the number of AI tokens used. To reduce friction, we introduced:

Despite this, prices starting at $5–15 became a psychological barrier.

When the app was free, nearly every installed store ran an analysis. Once monetization was introduced, the conversion from installation to first report dropped sharply. The gap was massive. Over the app's lifetime, we saw

in development, MVP iterations, and support, only to generate a total lifetime revenue of

Grammar Content Assistant analytics

With a relatively small user base, even a handful of negative reviews had a disproportionate impact on ratings and discoverability.

In retrospect, the issue went beyond execution:

The central lesson became clear: usefulness does not automatically translate into perceived value.

In the Shopify ecosystem, selling an app that doesn't directly help merchants generate revenue is nearly impossible. Even if the product is high-quality, if it doesn't bring revenue, merchants view it as an optional luxury rather than a necessity.

Furthermore, an app that doesn't generate significant revenue is effectively impossible to sell or exit. The costs of legal migration, contract negotiations, and the time spent on a "handover" would far exceed the actual market value of the app.

After the AI relaunch, we monitored performance closely. Six months later, the growth trajectory had not changed. For another two months, the app continued running without active development.

The decision to shut it down was made by the CEO and COO.

The market for content and grammar tools was not empty. Merchants were already familiar with browser-based solutions and general-purpose AI tools. In many cases, Grammar Content Assistant was compared not to other Shopify apps, but to tools merchants perceived as "free enough."

Before launch, we did not conduct deep external market research or competitor benchmarking. The idea was validated internally, based on logical assumptions about SEO, quality, and professionalism. What we underestimated was how merchants prioritize problems — and how difficult it is to compete with tools that are already embedded in daily workflows.

From a reputation standpoint, closing the app did not damage the company. On the contrary, handling the sunset transparently and responsibly reinforced an important internal standard: products are not kept alive for appearances. They are evaluated on value.

The cost of the project was not limited to the $100k budget. It consumed time, focus, and emotional energy. While we were iterating on Grammar Content Assistant, we were not building other, more impactful products.

This project reshaped how we evaluate ideas. Today, before starting a new app, we look beyond technical feasibility and focus first on measurable business impact. Shutting down a product is never easy, but knowing when to stop is a sign of maturity, not failure. We continue building Shopify apps — just with sharper questions and clearer priorities.
